Visitors:

  1. Chairperson Burry called the meeting to order at 5:40 PM, and introduced new Committee Member Patricia Mitchell.
  2. On a motion by Mrs. McGowan and seconded by Mrs. Trost, the minutes of December 5, 2000 were accepted with the correction that the next meeting should be Tuesday, not Monday, February 6, 2001.
  3. On a motion by Mrs. Joline and seconded by Mrs. McGowan, Mrs. Burry was re-elected as Chairperson, and Mr. Kilbride as Vice-Chairperson.
  4. A reception was held at Mr. KilbrideÕs home on January 14 for owners of historic homes who received plaques at the December meeting of the Township Committee. Most of the recipients were present to receive the awards. As all the plaques have now been awarded, Mrs. Burry suggested a reunion of all the recipients. Mrs. Plumfield suggested that the third graders, who study the history of Colts Neck, write letters to the recipients and ask them about their homes. Mrs. Burry will provide Mrs. Plumfield with the necessary information.
  5. The historic map is waiting for Mr. CookeÕs finishing touches. Mrs. Burry will call him to get an estimate of the cost. About 300 will be printed and sold, but funds will need to be budgeted for initial printing. Two should be mounted, one for Township Hall and one for the Library.
  6. Mrs. Burry showed the Committee members the framed, silk-screened winning flags from the Historic Celebration of May, 2000. They will be presented to the Township Committee at the meeting of February 14, at 7:30 PM. Mrs. Plumfield will encourage the children to be present, and the showing of the flags will be first on the agenda. Mrs. Burry will ask Ms. Rippa about making some flags into pillows for sale at the Colts Neck Fair. The artists were Grace Paras and Danielle Ferrar.
  7. Mrs. Davis presented a report from the House Tour Sub-Committee, which met on January 30 (the minutes are made a part of these minutes). The suggested dates are either Friday, September 21 or Friday, September 28. Mrs. Burry cautioned that the Monmouth County Conservation Foundation may have an event on one of those two evenings.

Mr. Kilbride had suggested possible homes for the tour. There were six homes in 2000, and each tour took 2 and _ to 3 hours, so the tour this year should visit no more than six places. After a discussion of the list, it was agreed that Mrs. Burry would contact the Flocks on Route 34, the Napoliellos on Heyers Mill Road, and Rev. Scott of the Reformed Church, and possibly the Carriage Hill Farm. She remarked that the church cemetery is a point of interest, and perhaps Agnes Duffy could recreate the skit she did last year. Mrs. Davis will contact the Sheehys on Conover Road. If the Flocks are not interested this year, Mr. Piotrowski will contact the Laings on Larchmont. Mrs. Burry stated that there had been a request to tour the Montrose School. Mrs. Whitney stated that the summer during which she opened it every Sunday only one person had visited. Desks are present, and a program could be presented if it is part of the tour. Mrs. Whitney stated that Dot Gunther would act as teacher.

The trolley was very popular last year with both guests and homeowners. If used again, they could cost as much as $2,350.00. If tour by private auto is also included this year, a written program and knowledgeable hostesses would be needed, as it is difficult to keep up with a constant stream of visitors. An additional option would be lunch at HuddyÕs Inn.

  8. Mrs. Burry, Mr. Kilbride and Mrs. Piotrowski will look for a professional to work on historic site designation. The State Historic Preservation Program has given suggestions.
  9. Mrs. Joline presented a report from the Historic Sites Plaques Sub-Committee, which met on January 29 (the minutes are made a part of these minutes). They recommend that the first two sites be the North American Phalanx and the site of Joshua HuddyÕs home. The plaques will be larger than the historic site plaques, and be mounted on free-standing poles. Permission to place the plaques will be needed. Mrs. Burry suggested plaques like the ones she had placed in Matawan, which are gold on blue. They are easier to see and read than gold on brown or black. The Sub-Committee will write the text. Mrs. Trost will get prices. These monuments will be mentioned in brochures of historic places in the Township.
  10. Mr. Piotrowski reported that an inventory of historic cemeteries could be assembled into a booklet, but without exact locations, to avoid vandalism. Inclusion of photographs would be especially attractive. Mrs. Burry appointed Mr. Piotrowski as head of this project.
  11. Mrs. BurryÕs article ÒColts Neck Ð A Historic ProfileÓ was included in ÒTown by Town:Impressions of Monmouth County,Ó published by the County of Monmouth, and published in the January 2001 issue of the Colts Neck Journal. A copy is made a part of the minutes. A brochure about the history of the Township will be written for public distribution.
  12. The Fair Sub-Committee, Ms. Furey, Mrs. McGowan and Ms. Rippa, has not yet met. They will need brochures, flags, maps and a cemetery booklet.
  13. Mrs. Burry reported that Betty Reilly attended a program at Poricy Park featuring an actor portraying George Washington. She will inquire about his prices and availability, in case the Committee would like to sponsor a presentation in the public room of the Library. It could be a joint venture with the Friends of the Library.
  14. The calendar of meetings for 2001 was reviewed. The July 3 meeting was eliminated. The September 4 meeting was moved to September 11 to avoid conflict with Labor Day weekend. The November 6 meeting was moved to November 13 to avoid conflict with Election Day.
  15. On a motion by Mrs. Joline and seconded by Mrs. Trost, the meeting was adjourned at 6:50 PM. The next meeting will be TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 2001.

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen Terry

Secretary
