Visitors:

1. Chairperson Burry called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM.

2. On a motion by Mrs. Joline and seconded by Mrs. Boylan, the minutes of April 3, 2001 were accepted with the corrections that both the Reformed Church and the Parsonage will be included in the house tour, there will be at least three (not one) additional hostesses in each home, and Commission Shinn should be Commissioner Shinn.

3. Mrs. Burry clarified that the post cards that are planned will have a rendering of the Colts Neck Inn designed by Julie McGowan. Mrs. McGowan will look into printing and prices. Ms. Terry is looking for information about special cancellations.

4. Mrs. Burry will investigate possibilities for having made into T Shirts the flag design of the winners from the 2000 History Weekend. Ms. Rippa reported that pillows would cost $25 each, made from the reproductions Mrs. Burry had done on textiles (about 20). Ms. Rippa will get more information.

5. Mrs. Plumfield had requested the Committee think of ideas for involving the school children who are studying Colts Neck history in historic preservation projects. This year the course is taught in the third grade. Next year it will be taught in the second grade. There are about 200 – 250 pupils. Their project this year is to write a form letter to recipients of historic house plaques, and assemble the responses into a book that will be presented to the Colts Neck Library. They will be taking a bus tour of the Township on June 7, accompanied by the teacher who is teaching a unit on architecture. Unless it rains, they will be stopping to do sketches of architectural features of historic Township buildings. These sketches could be assembled into a book that could be displayed at Archives Day in October.

6. Mrs. Burry will once again ask Bob Cooke for a timeline for the map. If he is not able to give a firm commitment for sometime within the next two weeks, she will consider having it done by someone else. Mr. Kilbride remarked that assembling the map would be easy, following the list he drew up.

7. Mrs. Davis reported that the sites which will definitely be included on the house tour are the Montrose School, the Sheehy home, the Colts Neck Reformed Church and the Reformed Church Parsonage and old St. Mary’s Church (Jeanette Murdock’s home). The Weschler’s 1855 yellow Gothic house in the Phalanx will be included if they are going to be in town. Ms. Rippa stated that the Bremers are very interested in being included. Mrs. Joline & Mr. Kilbride will speak with the Bremers. Mr. Kilbride will also ask the Jannsens on Creamery Road, and George Richdale, because he is a direct descendant of the original families.

8. Mrs. Burry reported that the “Historic Colts Neck” pamphlet subcommittee met on April 26. Mrs. Burry, Mrs. McGowan, Mrs. Piotrowski, Mrs. Plumfield, and Mrs. Trost were present. They decided upon the format that was followed in the pamphlet Mrs. Burry produced in Matawan. A paper measuring approximately 17 x 22 inches is folded in half along the long axis, then folded in half in the other direction, and again in the same direction. It includes a map, photos of several significant sites, and text for each place of interest. The sites selected in Colts Neck include the Colts Neck Inn, the Phalanx, Lairds Distillery, old St. Mary’s Church, the Colts Neck Reformed Church, the Honey Shop, the General Store, Wide Horizons, Duck Hollow, Bucks Mill, Colts Neck Realty, the Cooke farm, the Kilbride home, Long Lane Farm, Taylors Mill, the Napoliello home, Pam Carroll’s home, and Montrose, Hillside and Vandenburg Schools. The maps will have three sections: The Village; Scobeyville (including Wide Horizons, Polhemus tract and Phalanx); and Vandenburg (including the Conover and Heyers Mill tracts). Mrs. McGowan is in charge of photographs and art work, and paraphernalia from Phalanx and Lairds, assigned to Mr. Kilbride and Mrs. Trost, are being sought for photo inserts. Mrs. Piotrowski will investigate printing and prices. Mrs. Plumfield will assist Mrs. Burry with research on certain sites. A professional will be hired to create the camera-ready work. The Township has set aside $1,000 for the printing.

9. Reservations have been made for an exhibit at Monmouth County Archives Day on October 13 at the Library in Manalapan. Mrs. Joline, Mr. Kilbride, Mrs. Plumfield, Ms. Rippa and Mrs. Whitney volunteered to staff the exhibit.

10. Mr. Piotrowski is assembling a book about Colts Neck cemeteries, with photographs. Mrs. Piotrowski is looking for a publisher.

11. Mrs. Burry explained that placement of a building on the National Registry of Historic Places guarantees that no alterations can be made to the exterior without going before a committee for review and approval. Getting onto the National Registry is an extraordinary undertaking. It must be done by a professional with the appropriate degrees and credentials. She experienced this first-hand with the Burrowes Mansion, Matawan.

12. On a motion by Ms. Furey and seconded by Mrs. Boylan, the meeting was adjourned at 6:55 PM. The next meeting will be TUESDAY, JUNE 5, 2001.

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen Terry

Secretary
