Visitors:
1. Chairperson Burry called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM.

2. Mrs. Hnat noted that she had been present at the November meeting. Mrs. Plumfield noted that she was absent, but was excused. Mrs. Trost stated that she, not Mrs. McGowan, had announced that Mrs. McGowan had been appointed to the Monmouth County Shade Tree Commission. With these corrections to the minutes, on a motion by Mrs. Joline and seconded by Mrs. McGowan, the minutes of November 13, 2001 were accepted.

3. Mrs. Burry reported that Committee appointments that would expire at the end of December, 2001 are Mrs. Burry, Mrs. Boylan, Mr. Kilbride, Mrs. McGowan and Mrs. Piotrowski. All five agreed to accept reappointment for three year terms.

4. Mrs. Burry called attention to the newly completed map of Colts Neck as it was in 1865, which has been hung on the wall of the Township Hall meeting room. Another copy has been hung in the Library. They were presented to the Township Committee in the presence of Mrs. McGowan and Bob Cooke, who worked on the map with Mrs. Burry and Mr. Kilbride. The Asbury Park Press called Mrs. Burry about the map today. They are available for sale for $15.00 each

5. The Holiday Gathering was postponed to Sunday, March 17, and will be held at Mr. Kilbride’s home. Besides Committee members and their guests, the owners of the homes shown on the 2000 and 2001 house tours, as well as prospective 2002 house tour participants, will be invited. Mrs. Boylan, Ms. Furey and Mrs. Mitchell are members of the subcommittee for the gathering.

6. Mrs. Burry suggested a date be chosen for the 2002 house tour. It should not conflict with the Library’s kitchen tour, and pumpkin-picking season should be avoided because of the extraordinary traffic it causes. She further noted that many people had said they would be interested in attending if it were held on a Saturday. October 5 was tentatively chosen as the date. Ms. Furey agreed to chair the house tour subcommittee. Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Joline agreed to serve on the subcommittee. Mrs. Joline suggested that the luncheon at Huddy’s was an extra attraction. Mrs. Burry noted that the Committee has a mailing list of guests at the 2000 and 2001 house tours, and that invitations could be sent to them. This could be in the form of a post card, perhaps the lovely card Mrs. McGowan designed with the drawing of Colts Neck Inn.

7. Mrs. Burry reported that George Dittmar is absolutely intent upon rebuilding Bucks Mill, and his daughter and son have told her that they will follow through with his wishes. When complete, it will be dedicated to the Township, and managed by a board of directors, with the Historical Preservation Committee as part of the board.

8. Mrs. Burry stated that a Colts Neck historic pamphlet will be produced during 2002, in time for the Fair in August. Mrs. Boylan, Mrs. McGowan, Mrs. Trost and Mrs. Whitney agreed to serve on the subcommittee, to be chaired by Mrs. Burry.

9. At Mrs. Burry’s request, Mr. Kilbride will assist her in interviewing professional historians for Historic District designation.

10. Mrs. Burry explained that in order for the Committee to become a commission, the Township Committee would have to pass an ordinance. It is a complicated process, and it would confer wider powers. The advantages include having review and input on restoration of historic properties and construction of new buildings, and ability to protect historic properties. For example, a commission has power to initiate litigation to prevent demolition of historic properties. A credible argument needs to be presented to the Township Committee. Mrs. Burry asked Mrs. Piotrowski for a copy of a report she wrote regarding commission status.

11. On a motion by Mrs. McGowan and seconded by Mrs. Trost, the meeting was adjourned at 6:29 PM. The next meeting will be TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2002.

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen Terry

Secretary
